About the Series
I Stopped a River is a three-part series inspired by a monologue from Cowboy Mouth — a story about trying to dam a small river, succeeding for a moment, and watching it break apart overnight. The paintings translate that narrative into gesture and texture: water pushing against resistance, the pulse of movement, and the brief illusion of control.

Built with watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and solvent washes, each piece carries fragments of the monologue written directly into the surface. The text slips in and out of legibility, like a memory half-recalled. Turbulent blues collide with ink-black marks and bursts of yellow, echoing the way water reshapes whatever attempts to contain it.

The series reflects ongoing themes in James Henry’s work — impermanence, repetition, erosion, and the quiet, unpredictable force of natural movement.
